Observation

Intimacy requires a level of knowing. I’m not intimate because of position, or status, intimacy flows from knowing. Love, God, desires intimacy, so knowing is critical. I think we can be too focused on Jesus coming to save and lose that the focus of Jesus’ coming was also to reveal. If you want to know what God is like look at Jesus, he is the “exact representation of his being.” To know how God loves, how God rejoices over you, how God feels towards you, how God responds to your circumstances, look at Jesus and see her in full glory, and then from intimacy witnessed encounter intimacy personally.

We spend so much time musing, arguing, wondering, and being confused, as to what God is like. Many reject God because they have arrived at a disastrously poor picture of God. But if you want to know how God behaves, watch Jesus behave. Never stop looking at Jesus. He is the lens through which all scripture, all our statements, all our doctrines, and all our musing of God are to be interpreted. If Jesus wouldn’t do it, say it, behave like it, then don’t attribute it to God. We need to repaint our pictures of God through the glorious picture we have in Jesus if we are going to have the intimacy she desires to share with us. We need a more Christlike God.

Too often God is viewed as a taskmaster who sets the laws, puts in place punishment and rewards and then sits in judgement. This God only needs to send some commandments. Oh, that’s what he did, that’s what man wanted and that’s what God gave, but we saw how that played out. So God replaces law, punishment, and judgement with open intimate love. He sends Jesus to replace the old way with the new, to remove everything that interrupts intimacy by making me perfectly right, and then reveals himself to me that I may now experience her intimacy personally, supernaturally, and experientially. Jesus’ revelation of God’s work in himself, is as critical as the forgiveness as righteousness he released upon all humanity forever, actually it is what they were given for. The cross is not for the forgiveness of sin alone, it’s for the revelation of a lover and the depth of her love for me. Burn the pictures of the God of laws and judgement, and let’s repaint the God who desires to live with us intimately, let’s allow Jesus to be our muse and discover God’s brilliance and glory.

Application

I will all my life stay close to the gospels that I may continually look upon the glory of God in Jesus and see, grow in my understanding and live intimately with God. I will look through Jesus to see if my thoughts of God ring true to him. I will not attribute words or actions to God that would not be found in Jesus.

How often are your pictures of God not congruent with the person of Jesus?
What aspects of your God picture need to be repainted iJesus that you may live in her intimacy?
