Intimacy

Matthew 6:1 – What Audience Do You Play Your Life Too?

Here is the revelation that is shaping my life today – I play to some audience, who is it? The audience shapes the play.
Matthew 6:1 NLT
[1] “Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.”

Observation

Who is the audience of my life? Am I trying to impress others to feed my ego centred false self? Am I looking for the praise of others to feel good about me? Am I looking and playing to others to shape my worthiness, my acceptable, my goodness? They say “You play to your audience,” so who is my audience? The what and the way I do life will be shaped by my audience.
God invites me off the stage where others are my focus, into the intimacy of life that is lived from my true self. The me who knows and lives from an already uncaused and unconditional acceptance, love and worthiness. The true me does not need the audience to create me, sustain me, or assure me, but rather lives my life for their sake. The audience I am focused upon is the intimacy of God’s presence, the recipients of my life, of his image reflected through me, is no longer an audience to be impressed with, but those to be loved upon. I am not looking for their approval or praise, I am looking to selflessly express the love I have already received from the audience of one. I am no longer living transactional with the audience, I am not looking to get anything from them for they do not satisfy my needs. It is a give not get relationship.

Application

When I know my audience everything changes. I am no longer on the fragile merry-go-round of checking my likes from faceless friends. I live indestructible from an audience who always loves and cheers, and likes me. So the things I do are now done differently. They are motivated from a different place. I am free to be extravagant and generous without calculating the applause. I am not reading calculated lines that have anticipated an effect, I am just living from the true self me, I am just being me. My reward is in my action not in the response.

Response

Thank you that you stop the play of life and call me into something so deeper and more rewarding. Thank you for the freedom of living this way. Thank you that I am your audience of one and as I receive yourself I am shaped in your image, and this is my self, my costume, for life. I love this life.

Meditation

Mediation – who is my audience?
Consider:
Why do you do the things you do? What motivates your actions?
How desperate are you for the applause of the audience?
