Mark 3:20-21 – Insane Jesus

Here is the revelation that is shaping my life today – you will never meet Jesus outside of encounters with the supernatural.
Mark 3:20-21 TPT
[20] Then Jesus went home, but once again a large crowd gathered around him, which prevented him from even eating a meal. [21] When his own family heard that he was there, they went out to seize him, for they said, “He’s insane!”

Observation

A son of a carpenter doing miracles and teaching with wisdom – “insane.” It must be hard when those closest to you, those who know you best, think you’ve gone insane. Interestingly, even after immaculate conception, Mary couldn’t comprehend Jesus operating supernaturally. But this is how we often respond to that which we can’t explain, when confronted by mystery and supernatural we reach for “insane” as our explanation. But we were all made for this insanity. We were made for the transcendent. We crave, we search, and we desire experiences of transcendence. My experience is that the insanity of the supernatural of encountering Jesus is the greatest experience of my life, for I was made for them. So were you.
It was not just the supernatural healing, the teaching with authority, it was the presence of Jesus. People loved being in his presence. The fullness of God dwelt within him, and we see clearly that God was, and is, incredibly attractive to those who thought they were not good enough for God. Those who thought they had a monopoly on all things God, hated the presence of Jesus for he threatened their status and authority. They wanted to be marvelled at and when a competitor hit their corner they came out swinging.
Jesus is just as insane today as he was then. God wants to be known supernaturally, transcendently, and mysteriously. You can’t know God without this insanity. When all our knowledge is from our intellectual centre and does not lead to encounters that the heart knows are deeply meaningful but meaning can’t explain, then we have missed something of the magnificence of the design and desire of God for us. Without this insanity of God, the world will seduce us with its manufactured imitations of transcendence. Do we really want a God who is not “insane?”

Application

I will make room and have an expectation of the insanity of the mystery of God moving in my life. I will not look to control this insanity, as Jesus family sought to do, but rather become naturally comfortable with living supernaturally. I will not look to the manufactured when the real thing is available to me.

Response

Thank you that you lay in my heart the desire for you, the desire for transcendence. Thank you that you are not ordinary, or tameable, or safe, but you are mystery and supernaturally encountered and known. I love living “insane” for sanity is way too sanitised. This is a great life.

Meditation

Meditate – God is a mystery, a supernatural transcendent encounter.
Consider:
How insane is your experience of God?
Have you sanitised the supernatural and settled for lesser versions of transcendence?
