Living abundantly

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 – Becoming Me

Here is the revelation that is shaping my life today – I am more than I ever imagined myself to be.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 NLT

[17] For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. [18] So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord-who is the Spirit-makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

Observation

God has more in mind for us than forgiveness of our sins. More than rightness with Him that can never end. More than living in His presence and receiving His love. More than an eternal future where death has been defeated. The desire of God is to restore us into our true selves, our ‘like him’ made in His image selves. When the veil of the law is removed, when we no longer rely on ourselves in any measure then we can not only see the amazing love, mercy, grace, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness that is our God, but we will reflect His glory. God does not only rescue me to Himself, He restores me to myself.

I am free from being me. Wherever the Spirit is there is freedom from my small self, ego-driven self, that wants to be right, that wants to be successful, that wants to be first, best, and served. This small self dies in the participatory experience of the glory of God, and my true self, my divine-human self, becomes alive from my experience of the divine. This progressive restoration is not a learning that I apply to my life, I do not successfully become me, I am transformed from His presence. It’s as I see then I reflect His glory.

The real sin in life is the assassination of the character of God from my experience, and then the ensuing assassination of my likeness. This is what the enemy of God always focuses on, the corruption of the character of God. For I will never become more and more like a God who I cannot see and experience the glory of. So I will never become the true me when the true me I cannot see. The most important thing in my life is the way I see, my image of, God. And unfortunately, so often, we create God like us, vindictive, vengeful, angry, western capitalistic, punitive and small, rather than see His glory in all its fullness and be transformed into our true self like Him.

Application

This is amazing if I allow it to speak to me – “the Spirit-makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” I will not live with my mind veiled by the earn and deserve, be good enough mantra of the law. I will live by the Spirit and walk experientially into the participation of the glory of God that I may be transformed into His revealed image.

Response

Thank you that your restoration is that I can become me. Thank you that you desire my presence that I may experience me firsthand in the glory of you. You do not point in a direction and demand my march, you invite me to yourself and transform. I am becoming me, an amazing me, what a blessed life I live.

Meditation

Meditation truth – the Spirit-makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

Consider:

Have you lived in the fullness of the story of God over your life?

How do you respond to your being like God?
