Living abundantly

1 Timothy 6:17-19 – What’s your story of wealth?

Here is the revelation that is shaping my life today- we think we get wealthy and all will be good. But the true meaning of life is found in generosity.
1 Timothy 6:17-19 TPT
To all the rich of this world, I command you not to be wrapped in thoughts of pride over your prosperity, or rely on your wealth, for your riches are unreliable and nothing compared to the living God. Trust instead in the one who has lavished upon us all good things, fulfilling our every need. Remind the wealthy to be rich in good works of extravagant generosity, willing to share with others. This will provide a beautiful foundation for their lives and secure for them a great future, as they lay their hands upon the meaning of true life.

Observation

What is it that I rely on? Where is my trust placed? How much am I trying to rely on self and my ability to provide for myself? I have seen from personal experience the unreliability of riches, yet I seem to be drawn back to its false promises. I know again from personal experience the faithfulness and goodness of God, yet there is a lure in our consumerist society back to the false and fragile promises of wealth. It’s not that wealth is evil, it’s where I put wealth in the structure of my life.
Pride in posterity. I feel this draw of pride in wealth: personal wealth and the wealth of others. I want to chase it as a way of feeling worthy, and important. That’s crazy! There is still a success junkie in me that wants to be successful. He is so shallow and so demanding, there is no life in serving him. Our society feeds this pride story as we are impressed with the wealthy.
Wealth is good for one thing – generosity. If I can break the story of “need more” and “lack” and “fill your barns for the future” which are so prevalent in our world, then I can live generously in both deed and finance, for here is where “the meaning of true life” is. It’s not that complicated really! Life is found in generosity so live generously in all ways! This is the foundation and security of life. What a new humanity would be formed if this was the shaping story of our culture?

Application

I will continue to put to death the success junkie that chases wealth. I will live from generosity. My trust will continue to be in God who is faithful to provide for all my needs. I will be part of this new humanity God envisaged to be restored in his image and to shape the world.

Response

Thank you that you give me you as all I need. Thank you for showing me life and inviting me to write its story. I am rich in so many ways because of your presence in my life. I will live generously as you have shown me such rich generosity. This is a beautiful life.

Meditation

Meditate – Remind the wealthy to be rich in good works of extravagant generosity.
Consider:
Where is my trust?
What does the ongoing posture of generous life look like?
