Living abundantly Overcoming

1 Corinthians 10:13 – There Is Nothing I Cannot Overcome.

Here is the revelation that is shaping my life today- you can’t stop temptation, but you can stand against it.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT

[13] The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Observation

Here are the keys to overcoming all that the enemy of God sends to deceive us into a lesser life.

Firstly, We are all tempted in the same ways. What is tempting to me is not new and unique, it is the same temptation that the enemy of God has used throughout the ages, to draw God’s people away from Him and His ways. The enemy loves to make me feel like no one gets what I am going through, it’s just a deception to lead me into isolation. The enemy is not creative so he does not create new temptations, it is just the recycling of temptation. We must hear this clearly to avoid the sense of isolation and hence inability to overcome – “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience.” So I can let others walk alongside me. They do understand temptation albeit they might know it from another flavour.

Secondly, “God is faithful.” This is a foundational truth for life. God does not bring temptation, he never authors any kind of evil, He is faithfully present as people use their free will to release evil into their lives and the life of others. He does not stop temptation, and he does not control my response to temptation. Love demands this freedom. But, the enemy is defeated in that you can overcome every temptation. Defeated but not silenced. God never promised you would not experience temptation or the fruit of temptation, the release of evil. How often do I cry out – “where are you?” in the midst of evils onslaught. Rather than declare out, “God you are faithful.” Faithfully present, faithfully working for my good, faithfully bringing about your glorious redemptive plan. Faithfully holding me in your arms. Faithfully, lovingly, healing me. God wants you to know He is present and faithful in every temptation of evil for you to overcome. That’s right, I can stand against every temptation. “He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand.” Why? God is faithful. He is faithful to enable me to stand and He is faithful to enable me to regain my feet when I have not stood. We must not ever take the posture of “I can’t,” in the face of temptation. It’s a lie that destroys me.

Lastly, when temptation comes don’t try hard to stand against it. You don’t know the way out, God does. You lean into Him. You ask Holy Spirit for awareness as to why this tempting thought has power and currency to entice and shape your life? Is it laziness on my part that I need strength to overcome? Am I unaware of the temptation, and hence need His wisdom? Is it brokenness in me that I need healing to come before I can stand? Is it vows I have made that need to be broken? Is it generational curses that I need to be separated from? “He will show you a way out so that you can endure.” What a promise. Nothing I am facing, no temptation, either in its infancy or temptation that is a fully blown shaping influence over me, none of these can control me. Why? God will show me a way out.

Application

So I am not alone in my temptation, God is faithfully present, and he will show me a way out. How good is that? I can overcome all that the enemy would send my way, I will live from this shaping story. I will not allow the isolation story to separate me in my journey of freedom, for God often brings freedom through His people. I will lean into God’s faithfulness and His promised victory. Everything looks different from here.

Response

Thank you that you are faithful. In a world where nothing seems to stand – you do. Thank you that you are for me, and with me, in my challenges of temptation. I am never left alone to try and live your ways, you show me the way through to the beautiful life you intend for me. What a blessed life I live!

Meditation

Meditation truth – God is faithful

Consider:

What areas of Yoruba life is temptation having the shaping influence? Why? What is it source of power that God will lead you to overcome?

Do you know God as faithful? Or do you question where He is in life’s challenges? Do you believe He is the author? Are there lies here that need to be brought to the light? Remember if Jesus would not do it, then God doesn’t.
